These are photographs of the sketches I’ve done during this week’s workshop!! I had a lot of fun sketching these, it made me more aware of everything around me and supporting a good habit of ‘sketching everyday’! Hope you enjoy it!

SKETCHES OF MY JOURNEY FROM HOME TO CHULA

I’ve decided to reflect back on what I remember during my journey from home to uni.
The first thing I remember was… Breakfast in the car! A rush hour for everyone but breakfast is a very important meal!! So this was the first thing that came to my mind of this journey.

Well, during this rush hour… all I can remember is the bad and horrible Bangkok’s morning traffic. The traffic couldn’t get any worse than this, especially when I’m in a hurry. And what came up to my mind was cars, vehicles and red traffic lights…!!

What I did for this exercise was trying to feel the object and chose the media which I thought would communicate its mass, density and gravity.

MY HOUSE PORTRAIT
I decided to do a sketch basing on ‘What’s on each floor of my house!’ Skething objects/ utensils in each room to represent the rooms I have on each floor. Have a guess!!

This was a very difficult challenge but a really enjoyable one.
Even though this circle it is not yet a ‘perfect circle’ like the other groups, I think we nearly did it (with an aching eye hahaha)!! =)

The furthest line should have been a bit thicker than this so that we can see the top curve when we look through the frame.
Look at all the lines we drew! hahah… but we definitely learnt a lot from it!

Not knowing what will happen…

Then I noticed something… The way that this pair of ice melts… Its really strange
I thought it was going to fall. But it didn’t (the picture aren’t very good because I didn’t think that it’ll end up this way. I actually left this experiment while doing another one). It was an unexpected result.

Maybe its because of the wind, the sun or the heat that made the ice melt this way. But will it happen again if I did a similar experiment?? I will have to find out…

‘Transformation’, a marked change, as in appearance or character. http://www.answers.com

Seventy one percent of the earth’s surface is covered with water! There is no doubt why water is one of the most important elements to us, we need water to live. However, water can be more than a liquid substance. Water is the essential element in the formation of many objects such as ice, snow, snow flakes or even ice lollies! By concentrating on the term ‘transformation’, the properties of water allows us to explore and create many amazing things, varying from cool scientific experiments to amazing art works and sculptures.

Receiving the word water and transformation as a starting point to my project, what I did was listed words, phrases and researched for photographs I could think of, related to the word transformation. Many photographs and experiments I found for my research on the internet proved to me that with just ice and water, you can do so many amazing things, more than I’ve ever expected. But what seems to interest me is the simple experiment that anyone can think of, just ‘melting ice’. But the difference this time is that I decided to explore the shape of the transformation of the ice. Furthermore, as we leave the ice to melt and observe it properly we see the gradual vary in shape and form of the ice and the melted ice (water). What is great about water is that we can’t control the shape and direction that it flows. So for every few minutes I took photographs of the ice cube and recorded the gradual change in shape and form of it.

My second experiment was to repeat the first experiment but by using multiples of ice. The results were different, giving new shapes and forms. But then I thought what if the ices were coloured ones? How would they melt? Will the colours blend in together or would they float separately. So I decided to transform the colour of the water and recorded it as it gradually melts. So, I added colour to water and put it into the freezer, when it became coloured ice cubes I laid it out as checker patterns, the transformation of colour and state of water can create many patterns and new textures. I got some interesting results out of this experiment and got many interesting shots from it. However, it was exciting waiting for it to change shape; the uneven level of ice was also interesting to look at, they melted at different rates and transformed into different shapes.

However, this can’t be it, there are so many possibilities that I can do and play around with ice and water. Change its shape, changing its colour, melt it, break it, carve it, boil it or even light it up. I made further research to find interesting things I could play around with which I’ve posted up interesting ones onto my blog. From these simple experiments, the results of it is a great starting point for me, as a communication designer to design variety of things, just from the starting point of these words water, ice and transformation. But this is just the start, and I can’t predict the end, I very thrilled to try out some more.

One of the properties of liquid is that the shape and direction of it can not be controlled. So for my very first experiment i wanted to do something very simple but really observe its results. So, this is a very simple experiment to see how ice melts and gradual changes in shapes that the melted ice (water) creates.
